Bruce Mason (1921-1982) is one of New Zealand's all-time great playwrights, best known for The End of the Golden Weather and The Pohutukawa Tree.

Zero Inn, written and set at a time of great social change in 1970, is one of his gems.
In Maxwell Tully's newly built dream holiday home at a remote lake on
Christmas Eve he, his wife and mother-in-law are surprised by three young travellers who have dropped out of the materialist race.
They "followed the star" in the East and the throw of the I Ching, and are looking for shelter. The clash of generations, values and culture has unexpected results.

The play is a mix of humour, tension and tenderness. It interrogates topics still very relevant today: consumerism, the environment, Maori culture, colonisation, traditional gender roles, warfare and the arms race, unfettered progress - and marijuana.

Zero Inn, directed by award-winning director John Marwick, opens on Thursday 18 July.
