We’re seeking expressions of interest in directing for KAT Theatre in 2026

Email your proposal to katmembership@gmail.com before 5 pm, Friday 25 July.

All possibilities considered – plays for adults, plays for families, comedies, tragedies, and all genres in between.

Send us:

  • a few details about the play or plays you’re interested in directing (title, playwright, number/age/gender of actors required, synopsis) and what attracts you to it/them

  • a little about yourself, if we don’t know about you already (other plays you’ve directed, companies/clubs you’ve worked with, non-directing theatre experience you’ve had).

If you don’t have a play in mind, tell us the kind of play you’d like to direct (genre, New Zealand or other, period/contemporary etc).

If you’d like to discuss your ideas with us before you write your proposal, contact Mary on 022 083 5499.

Our 2026 season

February: Summer Play in the Park – Let your inner kid out as you create this wonderful entertainment for children and their families. Our annual entry-by-koha, under-an-hour-long play in Khandallah Park is always eagerly anticipated by audiences young and old. It’s been going since 2000, and we’ve now got the process of staging an outdoor ‘travelling’ production down to a fine art.

The season is eight performances over two weekends in February. Auditions are usually held in late October, with rehearsals starting in November, breaking for 3 or 4 weeks over the Christmas/New Year period, starting again in mid-January.

April or May: Short plays – A great opportunity to perfect a little gem with a small cast and minimal set. The programme usually consists of three or four plays, each with a different director and cast. The season is usually two matinees and two evening performances in one weekend (Friday to Sunday), in the middle weekend of the school holidays. Auditions are held in late January/early February and rehearsals start in late February/early March.

Directors and casts who enjoy competition have the option of entering their production in the Wellington District Theatre Federation’s short plays category or reviving it in late July to enter it in the Theatre New Zealand TheatreFest.

July: Mid-year production – The season is usually six evening performances and one matinee over two weekends (Thursday to Sunday then Thursday to Saturday) starting in the second week of the school holidays, If it’s a play for family audiences, there may also be matinees on the two Saturdays. Auditions are held in early to mid April and rehearsals start in late April.

October: End-of-year production – The same number of performances as the mid-year production starting in the second week of the October school holidays. Auditions are in late June/early July and rehearsals start late July.

All productions are rehearsed and performed in Cochran Hall, 106 Cashmere Ave, Khandallah except the February production, which is performed in Khandallah Park unless the weather forces us into the hall.
